Sanskrit Name: Manipura | Location: Solar Plexus/Upper Belly | Element: Fire | Color: Golden Yellow | Crystal: Citrine, Tiger’s Eye, Yellow Tourmaline
When was the last time you felt confident in who you are, in the decisions you make, and in your own self-worth? If your answer is something along the lines of “it’s been awhile”, then it is time to channel some energy and focus into your solar plexus chakra!
Over the past few weeks, you have been working to align your energy centers from the bottom up, starting with understanding the chakra system and the Chakras of Matter. To start, you are working on balancing your root chakra, or your foundation, as you move into achieving optimal energy flow in your sacral chakra, or your childlike inspirational center that revolves around passion, sexuality, and creativity. After these two chakras are aligned and functioning well, it is important to move into the third and final energy center of the Chakras of Matter, your solar plexus chakra. This is where you start to draw from your foundation, creativity, and passions to actualize these dreams into reality.
The Solar Plexus Chakra Symbol
Often represented by a vibrant golden yellow, the solar plexus chakra is a strong representation of the brightness that radiates from a person when their solar plexus chakra is balanced. This golden yellow color is used to symbolize energy, intellect, and the solar plexus’ connection to the element of fire. Represented by a circle with ten petals and a red downward-pointing triangle in the middle of the circle, the solar plexus chakra sign is highly connected to the all-consuming power of fire that warms, activates, and illuminates your path towards wisdom, knowledge, and success.
Located between the navel and solar plexus area, this chakra is often referred to as “The Power Chakra” because of its correlation to your core – the core that is often considered your personal power house for having a balanced and strong body. Essentially, the symbolism of the solar plexus chakra reflects the process of working through the three chakras of matter. As you learn to access your creativity, passions, and sexuality, you begin your awakening process of who you truly are or wish to be with a fiery enlightenment.
Understanding the Solar Plexus Chakra
In Sanskrit, the solar plexus chakra is called Manipura, translating to “lustrous gem” or “pearls of wisdom.” This is quite a fitting name for what is considered the power chakra. The Manipura is known for providing clarity and common sense, allowing you to open the doors to discovering who you truly are. As you learn to start following what truly ignites a fire inside of you, the solar plexus chakra opens your mind, body, and soul to the power of self – the biggest source of energy attributed to the solar plexus chakra.
When it comes to the first three chakras, the chakras of matter, it is easier to visualize this process as a growing human. At the root chakra, you are a child seeking a sturdy, reliable foundation that sets a precedent for the rest of your life. Once you find this, you transition into your childhood years where you should start to develop your sexuality and creativity. Then it’s time for some of the most miserable years for many of us – the teenage years. Your solar plexus chakra is the stage in your life where you learn to develop your sense of self. Many of us at different stages of our life will find this, but it may be tied to feelings of self-hatred and despair. When this happens, we often become reactive, angry, hard on ourselves, and unable to blossom into an adult that finds importance in self worth and confidence. If any one of these chakras are undervalued, unmet, or blocked because of past traumas and situations, all our chakras will be out of alignment in one way or another.
Figuring out who you are, what you love to do, and how to do these things regularly to make yourself happy throughout your entire lifetime can be a very real struggle, but it is essential to creating a life worth living. The Manipura is connected to your personality, your identity, your self-worth, your confidence, and your self-discipline. The main purpose of this energy center is to provide momentum to move forward into your goals, desires, and intentions instead of just letting them pass you by – it is a sense of personal power.
When your solar plexus chakra is highly attuned with positive energies flowing in and out of it, your authentic self begins to shine bright like the vibrant yellow attributed to this symbol. You move through life with ease, power, and control while constantly moving forward. It allows you to make conscious choices with intention and powerful action. You have the power to choose your life’s path – and this inherently increases your confidence, decision making skills, and the ability to say no (self-discipline) when you must. When taking care of your Manipura, you know that you have the freedom to make any decision you want to in life, you accept who you are – shortcomings and all, and you become confident in overcoming the fears and traumas that have held you back from living your best life.
Signs Your Solar Plexus Chakra is Blocked or Overactive
Based on the location of the solar plexus chakra, the Manipura is very connected to the digestive system, your metabolism, the liver, and the gall bladder. When your power chakra is unbalanced, chances are you are having an increased or decreased appetite – even to the extreme of an eating disorder – as well as pain and unease throughout your digestive system. These physical ailments are often indicative of an overactive or underactive solar plexus chakra.
A lack of mental clarity is also a key indicator that your Manipura is out of balance, especially because the solar plexus chakra is connected to your intellect, wellbeing, and behavior. When your solar plexus chakra is underactive, blocked, or deficient, you will experience a lack of self-confidence – and that means impacting every sense of self-worth you have. Without the confidence to execute your goals, you will be stagnant. This can lead to severe emotional and psychological issues that lead to codependency, seeking constant approval from others, and always worrying about what others think of you.
Alternatively, an overactive or excessive solar plexus chakra often contributes to a mentality that you are always right and everyone else is wrong, making it difficult to create long-lasting connections with others. This is often a sign of highly energetic, yet aggressive personality traits that can also cause problems in personal relationships – and a sign of false bravado. Arrogance or over-confidence is the biggest indicator of an excessive Manipura because it is simply a wall to hide behind. When we put a wedge between us and the rest of the world, we become lonely, aggravated, and lack confidence in who we are. You start to see yourself as a victim that is powerless to the ways of the world.
Whether you are suffering from a lack of motivation, feelings of inadequacy, migraines, low self-esteem, anger or control issues, or having difficulty making decisions, it is time to start channeling your energy into your solar plexus chakra to find your sense of purpose again.
How to Balance Your Solar Plexus Chakra
As with any chakra, using color visualization, healing crystals connected to that specific chakra, and oils during meditation and yoga can be incredibly helpful. Simply incorporating more vibrant yellow colors into your home can help boost your confidence and ignite your solar plexus chakra. Also, by practicing specific solar plexus asanas in your daily yoga practice, you can create positive flows of energy in your body that target your navel and upper belly – the most well-known and powerful solar plexus chakra pose being warrior one.
While these are great, easy, and quick ways to create positive energy flows in and out of your Manipura, the most important way to start activating your solar plexus chakra is to work on your self-confidence. Start by identifying a goal you have for yourself that you wish to accomplish in the next month. Then, create multiple small attainable goals for yourself to achieve that goal. As you start out, you will work on tackling one challenge on your path towards your goal. When you continue to achieve these small goals, your sense of self-worth and your confidence in your ability to achieving things increases. This progress helps to cultivate a strong sense of power, self-worth, and motivation – which in turn allows you to create more goals to work towards!
Even when you feel like you are not capable of achieving your wildest dreams or even getting up in the morning because you’re so exhausted from feelings of low self-worth, try faking it. This ‘fake it until you make it’ approach may seem ridiculous, but by shifting small things in your life, you start to believe it eventually. Start with how you dress; find an outfit of a powerful figure that you admire and try to replicate it. Stand up taller when you are in groups of people. Try speaking up during a meeting with a question or concern, even if it feels daunting at first. Look people in the eye when you talk to them – and most importantly, smile more. Even when the world feels like its weighing on you, there is scientific backing in the power of your smile on the outside, even if you don’t feel like smiling on the inside.
Even just getting outside more and connecting with the earth that keeps us nourished and flourishing can have a huge impact on your solar plexus chakra. When you open your mind, body, and soul to the fiery elements of nature, such as the radiant sun, you open your power chakra. No matter how you choose to activate and balance your Manipura, all of these will help you to discover who you truly are again.
